Note: If you're working with Dragon Copilot desktop, we recommend using Dragon Copilot in compact view for this workflow. Learn more about the Dragon Copilot desktop view.
To dictate in an editable field in your EHR, a document, or any other app:
-
Place the cursor in the application where you want the text to go and select the dictation icon
at the bottom. Alternatively, press the record button on your microphone or use a configured keyboard shortcut. -
Start dictating. Dragon Copilot listens to you speaking and transforms your words into written text.
-
When you're finished dictating, select the dictation icon again
, press the record button on your microphone, or use the configured keyboard shortcut.
Note: If you're working with the Dragon Copilot web or embedded app, the keyboard shortcut to start/stop dictation only works if Dragon Copilot has the window focus. If you're working with the desktop app, the keyboard shortcut works regardless of where the window focus is.
If the field you've placed the cursor in is supported by Dragon Copilot, the text is written directly in it.
If your cursor wasn't placed in an editable field or if the field it was placed in isn't fully supported, Dragon Copilot writes the text in the dictation clipboard as a new memo. From there, you can copy and transfer the text to your EHR. Learn more about the dictation clipboard.
Quick dictation best practices
-
Position your cursor where you want your text to be typed, then begin dictating (note: it's helpful to think that your text will go where your cursor is blinking).
-
Select the dictation icon or your microphone button to turn the microphone on.
-
Wait until the microphone is on before speaking.
-
Speak naturally as if you were speaking to someone in person.
-
Dictate in complete sentences and include punctuation.
-
Pause briefly before and after saying a command so Dragon knows that you are not dictating text. Learn more about Dragon Copilot commands.
-
When you're finished dictating, select the dictation icon or microphone button again to turn off your microphone so Dragon does not capture extra words.
